The anticipations of the NFL draft can be torture for many college athletes, however for Kelvin Smith Jr. a 7th round draft pick (the 9th pick for Miami), he knew he fate was sealed as a pro, however he “anticipated the draft to be earlier”. He describes the expectancy as “coming down to the war”. KJ says “I was waiting to hear from three teams: Dallas, New England, and Miami”. I got to chat with KJ, my childhood friend, the night before he headed out to Newark airport for his 6:30 am flight to Miami as a member of the Miami, Dolphins.

KJ put most of his life into the football. Embarking on his football career at the young age of nine. He started out as many young suburban NFL dreamers do, playing “popwarner” football in a league at the local park. KJ says, “ After that I just always wanted to play. I felt that this was want I wanted to do, I had the heart to play the game, and began to have a passion for the sport.” Unlike many adults, at nine years old Kelvin knew what he wanted to do. He went on to play for Syracuse University averaging a career high of 325 tackles, and becoming “one of the best linebackers in the nation”.

His passion coupled with talent paid off, he got a call from Coach Cameron of the Miami Dolphin’s who simply asked KJ “Do you want to play for the Dolphins?” KJ says, “ He asked me am I ready to work? And I said yeah.” The rest is history in the making. Tomorrow (May 4,2007) he will start mini-camp, a full three days of hardcore training, meetings, and bonding with his new pro team.

Yet, with all he has accomplished KJ has only executed phase one of his game plan. Going pro is just a start for this young ambitious all-star. KJ says “Within my first year three years to eventually become a starter with the Dolphins, to makes the Pro-bowl, and have a long career in the NFL.”
