That the Democratic Republic of Congo ( In Africa of course) is approx. the size of Western Europe? You can never tell based on the maps and globes that we all have seen growing up and continue to see today.
Another important, depressing, and unfortunate fact is that while we Americans complain about the lack of health care for all American citizens. Many people in other countries, in particularly the Congo are unble to recieve health care due to unfit hospitals, money, and acessiblity. According to a report that I read this morning on BBC News, a woman named Julie had a SEVEN DAY canoe ride to the nearest hospital from her village. (Read the article:
"Congo's silent harvest of death", for more information.
Hospitals which lack proper operating rooms, medicine, and the overall means to aid the sick is an extemely pernicious factor in the rising death rates in this particular country.
One quote from the article stuck out to me. As a mother tried to raise funds for her son's imperitve surgery.
"I need 61,000 Congolese francs (about $120; £60) for the surgery," the mother of one of the boys said, "but I haven't managed to collect it."
$120 US dollars I can't even remember the B.S I wasted that amount of money on....Can you?
