Diploma's for Thought: The Irony of Higher Education

I am back. Back to the United States, back from my apartment, back to blogging, and back to the disturbing reality of the second Great Depression. My European dreams interrupted by American reality… Welcome home Princepessa! Although my educational retreat is over, my time abroad was a wonderful learning, enriching, and inspiring experience; which in many ways has changed my life and has reinstalled a passion for foreign languages that I tend to revisit after my graduate studies. I have reintroduced myself to American culture, while simultaneously embracing Italian culture and all of its dimensions: language, food, and holidays.

With all of my accomplishments, I still find that as of now there is too much and not enough. As of June 9th 2008 I will be a proud graduate of the CUNY class of 2008 with a BA in Print Journalism, with that exciting but rather expecting news I will also be unemployed, dependent, and in debt…Hoorah!!! It could be worse, if there is a thing as good debt then I think I am meeting the requirements of the ideal representative.

It is ironic that now I have the career, I cannot find the job to match. But then again that is what Grad School is for…right? So like many up and coming American intellects who wish to advance in their careers, those who do not have a family friend in the biz, I will be attending Graduate School ( know news as too where, I just know that I am going) next enrolling semester…that is after I apply. I am looking forward to pursing higher education, as I love school, however this break will give me time to investigate scholarships and grants (definitely need those with the decrease in the U.S dollar).

When I think of the deficit, I can only help but think that we as a country are making milestones in history, we are also repeating it. As we, all know Barack Obama is the first Black (democratic) presidential candidate for 2008. Not only has his campaign tactics made history, his global presence has etched its way into clothing stores, markets, and windows all over the world. Yes we are making commendable strides, however the American economy is depleting rapidly and those who once were employed are now learning how to gradually cross the Mason-Dixon line of Poverty.
So although Obama may (cross your fingers, pray, campaign) become the future President of our nation, we as Americans have to also stand by him as he tries to reverse the economic plague. I have faith in my career and finding employment as it pertains to my career as an investigatory journalist; I know that it will all work out, the only question is when?
