The pre-show, which included the oh so annoying Terrence and Rosci was...umm, I guess what I would totally expect from BET.
The highlight of the pre-show for me was hands down the awkward appearance by Nelly and Ashanti. They dodged their relationship questions not with ease but...more awkwardness. They made me laugh...but not as much as Ashanti's get up. While promoting her movie over the past few months, she received rave reviews about her body being banging and her dresses being perfect for her. I guess because it was the Hip Hop awards, it was fitting for her to wear: A gold puff vest, pink tee, a dope rope chain, and heart bamboos....oh my and the side ponytail. She looked like a 12year old. Now don't get me wrong, I have tons of bamboo's(Sidebar: I will be putting up pics of my custom bamboos that will be on the market soon, the prices are great so make sure you cop...I mean support a sista!!!!) I even have a dope rope chain...but I would not have sent Ashanti there like that. Maybe if she was honoring someone at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors...but not there sweety. Especially when Ciara is walking around in those amazing 6 1/2 inch Alexander McQueen heels...stunning!!!
The actual show was totally weird. My highlights were all of the intelligent, powerful messages brought to us by Mc Lyte, Cornell West, KRS 1 and even a few words from the host Kat Williams. I also really enjoyed the ciphers that took place on different roof tops...I do remember that part from last year. I loved the semi-high waisted jeans that the Apple Bottom girls wore, especially the little girl...i have to put those in the collection for my niece.
I was really disappointed in one of my down south dudes...Weezy F. Baby please say the Baby! I could not understand why he chose to have his foam cup present at all times...While in the audience with his crew, which included his daughter, while performing on stage, while accepting awards. Come on Weezy, I know everyone was twisted but not right in front of the cameras. And we all know what Wezzy sips on...not water!
I was also very sad when Common(Sidebar: He had to be the sexiest man there) accepted TI's award for CD of the year with saying" where ever he is I accept this for him" and then at the end of what should have been TI's performance, Busta and some dude from PSC shouted "Free TIP". So sad...my poor lil TI, about a whole 95 pounds, in jail for having army guns...and not the Wezzy song....literally army guns.
I was also a little disturbed that right after MC Lyte spit some serious knowledge for us all, Hurricane Chris comes out with that little boy with the gold teeth(eww) from the video who has a red bandanna wrapped around his face like he is a bandit. Now, its cool these guys involve their kids or some one's kids in these songs and performances, but come on....Shortie is about 7 years old if that, and is looking like a mini banger. I didn't like that.
I felt a certain way about 2 of the Jena 6 being there. No, not about them being there but the way they presented themselves. Yes, they are products of the Hip Hop generation, but I feel that they are still proving themselves and by donning their fitted to the back and sunglases, which were in addition to their Jim Jones-esque Ed Hardy tees and pocket chains....America outside of Hip Hop probably shook their heads and said yeah they did it...look at them! No, suits and ties would not have done it, just a little tapering, loss of the sunglasses and if they pulled their pants up just a tad bit....it would have been perfect, even if it was for that moment when they were on stage. I am glad they were able to get the needed support from Hip Hop and BET. Their situation has possibly sparked this generations Civil Rights Movement....The revolution is definitely being televised!
Anyway, I was was over joined and definitely on my feet for the finale. SOULJA BOY!!!!! Ok I love this kid...yes he does say hoe or what appears to be hoe, and his other songs do talk about pimp slapping(wow), but I love how he got on in the game and how creative he is. He made that song, beat and dance in his living room and thanks to you tube, he has the #1 song in the entire USA and not to mention, he is getting a major check for the ring tones that are sold.(My youngest brother has numerous versions of it on his cell). I think the dance is really cute and a lot of people argue that its not real hip hop, but this is hip hop to the rest of the 17 and under crowd. And I watched the whole crowd of adults and especially all of the little ones sing and
CRANK AND ROLL, WATCH EM CRANK THAT SOULJA BOY AND SUPERMAN THAT HOOOOOOOO....CRANK THAT SOULJA BOY, CRANK THAT SOULJA BOY!!!
Until next year....Hopefully the extremely big names in Hip Hop like Hov and 50, just to name 2(lol) make an appearance. I would really love that!
Peace,
Sequin "I Still Heart Hip Hop" Dot
