First of all praise to the man above, with out him we would be lost!!! I am watching the US Open and I am enlightened. I was near tears as I watched 10 of Black America's first woman honor the great Althea Gibson. They were tears of joy and also of discontent, many of the African American woman were crowned the first with in mine and/or my parents lifetime! Just to name a few Phylicia Rashad (SP), the first African American woman to win an Emmy for an off Broadway play, Susan L. Taylor, the first Journalist to receive the highest ranked award for journalist, Cynthia Cooper, a two time first, Dr. Jameson, the first woman and first African American to travel to space!!! You don't learn that in US history class, they don't even mention those names in Black History course, at least not while I was in school. I can almost guarantee that more than half of the African American children growing up today are not aware of their history. How far have we actually come? But back to the purpose of this particular blog:
Just 50 years ago Althea Gibson, born in North Carolina, and raised in HARLEM (boy to we breed some of the best), was the FIRST American of African decent to win and play in the US Open. During the era of segregation she held her head up , as she went against the norm and pursued her dream in one of the most racist and sexist American sports. In 1953, just three years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, Ms. Gibson went on to play and win the US Championship!!!! She is definitely a legend and deserved all the praise that was bestowed upon her tonight.
Althea Gibson, Susan L. Taylor, Roberta Flack ( whom I love and adore), Dr. Jameson and all the other outstanding black woman of America are testaments to what is in store for the DOT's and I!! They paved the way for young hope fulls like me to never give up! If America as progressed as much as politicians claim, and all those woman where able to not only plant their seeds, but watch them grow in White America; during a time of lynching, boycotts, and isms, than imagine what I can do NOW!
With love,
GlamDOT
